How To Add Interesting Extras To Homemade Ice Cream
With most ice cream recipes, you can go one step further and add something extra to make the flavor and texture more exciting. If you're using an electric ice cream maker, there are 2 ways of doing this:
Just wait until the last 2 or 3 minutes before your ice cream has batched and then add your choice from a whole list of options such as fudge chunks, chopped hazelnuts, almonds or walnuts, mashed banana, chocolate chips, broken chunks of your favorite chocolate, broken cookies, chunks of homemade fruit crumble even or mini marshmallows. There are so many!
Here are just a few examples to get you started::
banana ice cream with chunks of fudge
chocolate flavor with 1/2 cup chopped walnuts
strawberry with 1/2 cup
mashed banana
IMPORTANT: Chop any solid extras into small pieces, especially if you are making ice cream for small children.
2. Adding liquid or powder extras
Just before transferring your ice cream mixture into the ice cream maker, you can add such things as mint extract or cinammon. Again, there's lots more.
Personally, I like chocolate ice cream with 1 tablespoon of cinammon OR 1 teaspoon of mint extract. Delicious!
My advice - just choose an ice cream flavor you love and let your imagination conjur up the rest. If you're looking for recipe ideas read my popular homemade ice cream page here
