Movies That Feature Ice Cream

We're all great movies fans in my family and it's always a thrill to watch out for any references to ice cream. Ice cream seems to be a subject that can crop up just about anywhere in a movie and in a whole range of different contexts. Here's a list of movies that in some way feature or mention ice cream.

Come Clean (1931) (Short film)
Starring Laurel & Hardy. See my page dedicated to Laurel & Hardy ice cream scene

It's a Wonderful Life (1946)
Starring James Stewart, Donna Reed, Lionel Barrymore
Directed by Frank Capra
The young George Bailey serves Mary at the soda fountain with some chocolate ice cream. Just as he leans down to finish scooping out the ice cream, Mary leans over towards his deaf ear and whispers that she will love him till the day she dies.

Help (1965)
Starring The Beatles
In various scenes, a "Mr. Whippy" ice cream truck is used as a hideout. "Mr Whippy" was a popular soft serve ice cream in the UK and New Zealand - the American equivalent would be "Mister Softee".

2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
By Stanley Kubrick. The movie features a reference to "Howard Johnson's Earthlight Room". Howard Johnson of course became famous for his roadside restaurants and the ice cream he produced - using his mother's recipe, the ice cream had a higher butterfat content than other makes of ice cream and proved incredibly popular.

Blazing Saddles (1974)
This now classic movie from Director Mel Brooks has a fictional 'cowboy' town in which we see a Howard Johnson's restaurant offering "1 Flavor" Also every citizen in the town has the family name Johnson!

The Blues Brothers (1980) featured a location for Howard Johnson's along the Illinois Tollway.

For Your Eyes Only (1981)
Roger Moore as James Bond makes a memorable quip to a girl (Bibi) of "Now put your clothes back on, and I'll buy you an ice cream" (More quotes from the movie here)

Accidental Spy (2001)
Starring Jackie Chan
There's a great action sequence where Jackie is chased out of a turkish bath half naked and pursued through a turkish market where he has to use all kinds of props from market stalls to cover his 'dignity'. He eventually is forced to grab someone's newspaper only to turn round and run into a boy eating a strawberry ice cream cone which of course sticks to the newspaper and 'disrobes' Jackie once again. A very clever and funny sequence.

Borat (2006)
Starring Sacha Baron Cohen
In his quest to travel to California, Borat hires an old ice cream truck.

Iron Man (2008)
When Tony Stark (played by the fabulous Robert Downey Jnr) first flies through the night sky in his Iron Man suit he passes a ferris wheel and, using his magnified vision, zooms in on two children sitting on the ride each eating an ice cream cone. The little boy's scoop of ice cream falls off the cone!
